#132: How to Teach Your Children About Money with Keli Calderon

“I just think there’s a lot of shame around money. I think there’s a lot of shame of not having enough, a lot of shame of having too much, of maybe how you got it - maybe you’re not proud of your job.” -Keli Calderon

Keli Calderon knows what is like to be in financial distress. In her financial history she has declared bankruptcy and even had a car repossessed! She knows the shame, guilt and strain that comes from not managing money well. But she also knows the pure joy of becoming debt-free and the discipline and motivation that it took to get out of debt on a teacher’s income!!

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, we discuss Keli’s great passion: teaching children about smart money management.

We discuss:

  • Why she is so passionate about teaching kids about money

  • Her financial history and the amazing turn around that she made

  • Why money is such a taboo topic

  • Typical unhelpful money beliefs that are commonly held

  • At what age we can start to talk to kids about money

  • How we can avoid passing our limiting beliefs about money down to our kids

  • How we can teach kids the value of earning and saving money

  • What her thoughts are on allowance vs. earning money through chores

  • Whether we should require kids to donate to charity or save a certain amount of money

  • If we should worry if we have a “spender” or a “stingy” kid

  • What is a money mistake that parents make when raising their kids

  • What personal habit she is most proud of

  • What she wishes more people knew
