#85: Cara Cifelli on how a Plant-Based Diet Aided her ED Recovery

“I would argue that I was borderline, ‘I’m either going to die, or I’m going to get better.’ It was dark. And I decided to get better.” -Cara Cifelli

Cara is a beautiful soul doing wonderful work in the world. After suffering from a decade-long painful eating disorder and going through her own recovery she is now helping others through her work as a health coach and nutritionist. I really loved chatting with Cara because her journey has led to her discovery of many of the same tools that I utilize and teach. In addition, she has taken her love of delicious, satisfying plant-based meals and shared it in her newest book, Vegan Buddha Bowls.

In this episode, I have a candid conversation with Cara Cifelli of Cara’s Kitchen where we discuss her history with eating disorders, body image and the work that she does now to help other women develop a healthy relationship with food and their bodies.

We discuss:

  • How she discovered plant-based nutrition

  • Her history with an eating disorder

  • How she defines dieting and what anti-diet means to her

  • How to navigate our food choices in our thin-obsessed culture

  • The difference between body acceptance, body confidence and self-love

  • Why she wrote a book about Buddha bowls!

  • What she wishes more people knew

  • What personal habit she is most proud of

I hope that this episode inspires you! Stay tuned for a special BONUS episode on Valentine’s Day! Have a plantastic week!

More about my honored guest:

Cara Carin Cifelli is a Certified Health Coach, Holistic Nutritionist, chef, author, podcast host, and avocado toast lover. Cara passionately provides the tools to help women leave behind dieting, disordered eating, and body shame so they can show up more fully in all areas of their life. She inspires others to leave behind society’s expectations as she guides them into their most confident and vibrant versions of themselves. This self-taught chef learned how to love food again as she was recovering from an eating disorder that she struggled with for 10 years, which she touches on in her new book, Vegan Buddha Bowls

Cara took her daily pain and struggle and turned it into her life’s work. She quickly learned how easy and exciting healthy eating could be and she wanted to share this with others. She took her delicious recipes to social media where she has thousands of people waiting for her to share her next plant-based creation. As the demand for more recipes grew, Cara knew it was time to write a cookbook. Enter, Vegan Buddha Bowls.  Vegan Buddha Bowls includes delicious plant-based recipes that Cara has personally made and created with easy to find ingredients, with a few unique ones to hopefully bring something new to the reader’s pantry. You will find buddha bowls, nourishing salad bowls, veggie-rich pasta bowls, energizing breakfast bowls, simple delicious sides, plant-powered soups, and so much more!
